Freeze your credit at Equifax
A freeze stops a thief from opening new credit in your name. It does not hurt your credit score.
This is free. You don't need Free My ID to do it.
Printing this for someone? Press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on a Mac).
- Cost
- Free to place, lift and remove.
- Time
- About 10 minutes online.
- Official site
- equifax.com
What to have ready
- Your Social Security number
- Date of birth
- Your current address
- A phone that can get a text message (for the code)
- An email address
Step by step
- Open the Equifax freeze web address above.
- Choose 'Place a Security Freeze'. You make a free myEquifax account (you must be 18 or older).
- Prove it is you. Equifax sends a code by text, or asks questions about your credit history.
- Turn the freeze on and write down your user name and password somewhere safe.
- No computer? Call (888) 298-0045 instead.
Opens equifax.com, the official website.
Good to know
- A freeze at one bureau does not freeze the others. Freeze all of them. Freezing Equifax alone is not enough.
How to undo it
When you need to apply for credit, sign in and choose 'Manage a Freeze' to lift it for a while or remove it. You can also lift it by phone. It is free.
