Get your phone number off people-search sites
Typing a phone number into a people-search site can bring up a name and address. Here are the free steps to ask each site to take that listing down.
Why is my number there?
People-search sites build profiles from public records and other data, and link them by details like a phone number. Numbers can reach these sites from public records, marketing lists and other sources. We don't claim to know which source put your number on a given site.
How do I get it taken down?
- Search your own number and name, and write down each site that lists you.
- Use each site's own removal page. Our step-by-step guides cover Spokeo, Whitepages, TruePeopleSearch and more sites.
- Remove the listing that shows your number. Most removal pages ask you to pick that listing and remove it. Each listing is a separate request, and a site can have more than one listing for you.
- Use an email address just for removals. You should never have to give a card number or a Social Security number.
- Check again now and then. Some sites can list people again under a new record.
Will this stop the calls?
Not on its own. Removing listings doesn't change anything with your phone company or your phone.
Rather not do it all by hand?
Free My ID is a free, open-source Windows app that sends the removal requests for you and keeps checking. There's no account. It works on people-search and data-broker sites only, and it gives a site your phone number only if you switch that on.
